Austin Marquez: Healing Through Music and Community
#58: Austin Marquez (he/him) stumbled upon a job listing at The Phoenix at a time when the community not only needed him, but he needed a sober community too. As Austin recalls, he decided to get sober on a Monday and got the call he was hired at Phoenix that Wednesday. Teaching at Phoenix gave him an opportunity and responsibility he wasn't fully ready for, but the timing was perfect -- it became his new 'home base' and a new community to learn from and give back to. Listen to the episode to hear more of our conversation with Austin, including:
- How being in recovery has allowed him to open up to not only his students, but to everyone in his life on a deeper level
- The importance of letting go of control -- we can't learn and grow if we focus solely on trying to control every experience
- How in active addiction, Austin was unable to create music for years, but the second he went into recovery and could care for himself and his craft, the creativity flowed
- The self-realization that he had a story to tell that could benefit other folks, and he could convey it through music
- The greatest gifts of sobriety: his music and his community, both of which have helped him heal
