Finding Your Hobbies in Sobriety: A Pursuit of Joy and Curiosity
#61: On this week's 'snack-sized' episode, Bryce and Liz discuss how to open up your life to new hobbies and activities in recovery, a phenomenon that is simultaneously amazing and daunting. It takes an enormous amount of mental and physical capacity to have your world revolve around a substance. And once you remove that substance from your orbit, it becomes a whole new quest of self-discovery to dig into what you're actually interested in and how you want to live your life. We delve into this and more:
- How for Bryce, he had to ask himself "who am I?" and how can I learn to love and accept all the pieces of myself?
- As for Liz, she pointed out the importance of doing new things just because they bring you joy. Trying out new interests don't have to be part of some grand scheme or huge purpose, it can be for delight.
- The boredom that can come when you put down the substance.
- How being intentional about experiences allows us to find what we're actually interested in.
- It all starts with one courageous first step. Lead with curiosity and patience, and understand that it's ok to try something and not like it.
- Be patient with the process and give yourself grace. Ultimately, we are the captains of our own ships.
