Alison Jones Webb on Being an Ally: Who are we, and how do we support the recovery community?
Show Notes

#40:  Today we talk to author and recovery advocate Alison Jones Webb.  Alison found her home in the recovery community through a career in public health. Her work related to prevention, treatment, recovery, and harm reduction introduced her to people and their incredible stories, ultimately inspiring her to write “Recovery Allies: How to Support Addiction Recovery and Build Recovery-Friendly Communities"

We discuss:

  • What it means to be an ally to the recovery community,
  • The power of storytelling in creating connections, fighting stigma, & building community; and how allies can keep the conversation going,
  • How working with the recovery community led to self-exploration and reflection about her own attitudes and experiences with substances, as well as her family members’ experiences,
  • The clarity that comes with understanding and empathizing, and the courage it takes to seek it,
  • Who and where is the "recovery community," and the importance of recovery-friendly communities to include all of us,
  • The opportunities that arise for allies to make a "happy connection" around recovery and how those connections & conversations can change public perspective.
