Rise Recover Live
Kelvin Young, Sound Healer: Racism in Healing Communities and Recovery Behind Bars
Show Notes

#22 Kelvin Young is a healer and a person in recovery.  After growing up in an environment that encouraged the suppression of emotions and discouraged healing practices that did not involve substances, his first sound healing experiences were, as he describes, "a sip of healing in a sea of chaos."  He knew that if he could experience that level of peace while he was behind bars, the possibilities were endless upon his release from prison.  So he became a sound healer himself.

When Kelvin looked around, he didn't see any other men of color in yoga and healing communities.  Nor did he see many leaders who looked like him in recovery spaces.  In this episode, with an unwavering and deep compassion for himself and others, Kelvin talks frankly about why that is.  He names systems that were designed to keep people sick, addicted and incarcerated; and how he not only found freedom within himself, but now reaches out a hand to others & breaks down stigma within and about BIPOC communities.

In addition, we discuss the following:

  • The beautiful practice of sound healing and other holistic tools.
  • The power of connection with others, within ourselves, and with nature.
  • Finding wholeness in exactly who we are.
  • How media portrayal of black men influenced racial trauma, addiction and incarceration.
  • Being of service, and how safe healing spaces can break misconceptions.

And so much more!  This is an episode you do not want to miss, and one we hope you share with a friend.
